https://cache.legacy.net/legacy/images/Cobrands/DelawareOnline/Photos/WNJ083658-1_20181023.jpgWilmington - Jack Mitchell, 91, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2018.

Jack graduated from Ithaca High School, NY in June of 1944. That August he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, but World War II ended before he could see any action. After graduating from the Rochester Business Institute, NY, he married Charlotte Savage. Shortly after that he and Charlotte moved to Phoenixville, PA, where he opened a sewing machine and vacuum sales and service store. In 1953, he was asked by his father, Ray Mitchell, to come to Wilmington to help open the original Mitchell's 5 and 10 in the newly built Fairfax Shopping Center. Together with his father, mother, brother, and sister, they grew and expanded the 5 and 10 to Mitchell's Variety, and eventually to a junior department store, Mitchell's Family Store.

In his earlier years, Jack was an avid pilot, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He loved woodworking, boating, playing pool, collecting brass locomotives, and collecting duck decoys. He loved to build things, whether it was display cases for Mitchell's store, an addition for his Fairfax house, or when buying, renovating, and renting or selling the many houses that he invested in. He loved to spend time with his family at his house in the Poconos.

Jack was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Charlotte; and his grandsons, Andrew Mitchell and Kevin Lehm. He is survived by his brother, Joe Mitchell; his sisters, Joan Hicks (Jim) and Judy Bonislawski (Frank); his daughter, Cyndi Lehm (Stephan); his son, John E. Mitchell, Jr.; and many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of Foulk Manor North and Delaware Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of Jack.

Visitation will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 4900 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE on Friday, October 26, between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, followed by a Christian Memorial Service at 11:00 AM, followed by burial at Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, Newark, DE 19711;
