Henry James Harkins,
age 69, died on November 19, 2013 and has gone to join his brothers in combat
who have gone before him. He was born April 4, 1944, the son of the late
Eugene and Aline Harkins of Wilmington. He was a
graduate of Archmere
Academy and attended Wesley College
and the University
of Delaware.
A wounded Vietnam
veteran, he was the recipient of the Silver Star and the Soldier's Medal,
awarded for heroism performed outside of actual combat. In addition to his Vietnam
service, Hank was a pilot with 198th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopters)
Delaware Army National Guard. He was employed by the CSX Corporation until
retiring because of a physical disability.
He is survived by his
wife, Barbara of Wilmington and his son, Craig (Joanna) of Chamblee,
GA and step-daughter, Dawn Panagos (Dino) of Wilmington.
In addition, he is also survived his sister, Mary Ward of San Diego, CA and
his brother, Michael (Helen) of Wilmington and four grandchildren, numerous
nephews and nieces.
Hank was a lover of
dogs. An avid fisherman, hunter and golfer; however, these activities became
limited due to his increasingly painful back injury. He enjoyed his weekly
poker sessions with his veteran buddies at the Delaware Veterans on Nammans Road.
He followed all college football every weekend. Like all Eagles fans, he was
an expert couch coach.
Visitation with family
and friends will be held on Sunday, November 24 from 3-5 PM at McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, with a funeral service to
follow. The burial will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans
Memorial Cemetery,
Bear, DE.
