John L. Hanley Sr.(1933 - 2016)
AGE: 82 • Wilmington Passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, November
2, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born at Wilmington General Hospital on December 13, 1933, John
was the son of the late Joseph A. and Katherine Elizabeth (McDowell) Hanley.
He was a 1952 graduate of Archmere Academy and
earned an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice
from Delaware Technical Community College. A member of the Naval Reserves,
John was called to Active Duty from 1953 to 1958. After his Naval career, he
worked as a law enforcement officer with the City of Wilmington from 1958 to
1980 and at the State Capitol from 1980 to 1998 when he retired. His
memberships included the D.A.P. where he served as a trustee and a board
member, the F.O.P. Lodge 1 and 11 and the Lawrence Roberts, American Legion
Post 21 as Post Commander. His wife, Ann F. (Hayes) Hanley, predeceased him
in 2015. He is survived by his sons, John, Jr. and his companion, Carol
Ferris, and Michael J. and his wife, Shirley; his daughter Lisa Marie McCarley and her husband, Timothy; and three
grandchildren, Timothy Ryan, Michael Joseph and Ashley Lynn. Friends and family are invited to visitation on on Thursday, November 10th at Holy Rosary Church, 3200
Philadelphia Pike, Claymont after 9:30 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at the church at 11 AM. Burial will be on Monday, November 14th at
11 AM at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road,
Bear where military honors will be accorded. Donations in John's memory may be made to Compassionate Care
