John E. Griffiths

John was born in Utica, NY, the youngest of six children to Robert and Catharine Griffiths. He was predeceased by his parents and five siblings. John is survived by his children, Mary Saefkow (Thomas) of Ohio and John E. Griffiths (Carol) of Delaware; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. His grandchildren are Matthew Saefkow (Sarah), Michael Saefkow (Jill), Stephen Saefkow (Sarah), Daniel Griffiths, David Griffiths (Christina), and Katherine Pfeffer (Oliver). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.


John was drafted into the Army during his first semester in college at Rensselaer. John served in the 88th Infantry Division in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in a combat zone. Following the war, John earned his engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his law degree from Cornell Law School. John worked for DuPont for thirty-three years where, for most of his career, he served as a Senior Patent Attorney.


Over the years, John was active in the Jaycees, the Wilmington Trail Club, Sing-Out Delaware, and ballroom dancing at the DuPont Country Club. He was a regular volunteer at the Carrcroft Swap Shop and was recently honored for his 25 years of service to Carrcroft Elementary School. He enjoyed tent camping and RV traveling with his favorite vacation spot being Acadia National Park in Maine. After the RV days ended, John enjoyed spending many days at "their campground house" in the Amish Country with get-away weekends continuing until his death. John was an active participant in his wife's career as a mathematics teacher. After John's retirement from DuPont, he routinely attended mathematics teacher conferences and meetings with Denise both at the national and state levels and volunteered his time to the Council of Presidential Awardees in Mathematics and DCTM - Delaware Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In recognition of his service to the Council of Presidential Awardees in Mathematics, he was named its first Honorary Member.


In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either of John's two favorite charities - Friends of Acadia, P.O. Box 45, Bar Harbor, ME 04609 or a college scholarship program for future mathematics teachers sponsored by the Council of Presidential Awardees in Mathematics: CPAM Scholarship, 140 Blueberry Lane, West Lafayette, IN 47906.


Due to current events with the coronavirus, funeral services will be held at a later date.
