Irvan Vincent Paul Chelly

Age 95, of Wilmington, DE passed away at home on June 20, 2011.

Born in Plymouth, PA, he was the son of the late John and Dora Andrews Chelovsky. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, a Journeyman Carpenter, Head Instructor of the Department of Vocational & Industrial Education in Nazareth, PA, Regional Field Representative for the Department of H.E.W, Director of Education for the Wilmington Delaware Board of Education and Associate Professor and Director of Cooperative Education at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. A dedicated and loving father whose volunteerism included Chairman of the Delaware Congress of P.T.A's, Vice-President of the Adult and Continuing Education Association of Delaware, the NEA, and the Ronald McDonald House.

He was an Eagle Scout and graduated with honors from the ROTC program at Penn State University in 1942 where he played varsity Lacrosse. He earned his master's degree in Supervision and Administration at Lehigh University in 1950. Doctoral work was completed at Temple University. Irvan served with distinction in World War II under General George S. Patton and during the Korean Conflict. He loved being a caregiver and will be remembered as an accomplished bowler winning multiple medals in the Delaware Senior Olympics. He was a longtime active member of The Delaware Veterans Post #1. He enjoyed card playing, golf and gardening.

He is survived by 3 daughters: Marie Gregg and her husband, Jim of West Chester, PA, Pamela Chelly Waters of Wilmington, DE, and Michaelene Shelley and her husband, Michael of Palm Harbor, FL. Irvan was the proud grandfather of Anne Gregg Gordon and Lisa Gregg Kitchen both of West Chester, PA. He is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, LaVerne Redman Chelly; granddaughter, Christy Lane Waters Fitzner; siblings, Raymond Chelovsky, Isabelle Chelovsky Hester, John Chelovsky, Dorothy Chelovsky Janowski and Melhart Chelovsky.

The family also acknowledges the love and care provided by Marcia Ofum (Dorrett White) and Dee White during the past several years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 pm, Monday, June 27, St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 7 Sharpley Road, Wilmington, DE, where friends may call at the church after 1 pm. Interment will be private at a later date.
